Abstract
This chapter explores issues of sexual health in Latin America, with a focus on four broad topics: Latin American medical education and sexual health; pregnancy, contraceptive use, and attitudes toward gender among adolescents in Latin America; sexual disorders and behaviors in Latin America; and less traditional sexual behavior and sexual identities. For some domains, Latin American populations show similarity with other parts of the world; for others, the Latin influence appears responsible for certain trends and attitudes specific to the region. However, in general, insufficient knowledge about most of these topics, as well as the need for more research on sexual behavior, sexual activity, and difficulties/disorders of this population, indicates the dire need for further attention to the study of sexual issues in Latino/Latina populations. The effect of social inequality—affecting living conditions and the exercise of sexuality—must also be considered. Finally, issues of sexual discrimination need to be addressed, as sexual health depends not only on specific care, but also on the implementation of sexual and reproductive rights.
