Abstract

This chapter contains answers to the seven research questions posed at the beginning of the research project. Different types of situations are indicated in which certain characteristics of French of Algerian origin (FAOs) are identified as French, Algerian, non-French, or non-Algerian. Examples are given of situations where FAOs may be simultaneously identified as French and Algerian, or where it is difficult for them to identify with both national categories at the same time. The chapter also discusses the theoretical conclusions resulting from the research. At the end, the results of the qualitative research are presented in graphic form: Fig. 8.1, Map of interrelationships between selected identifications of French of Algerian origin.

Notes

  1. 1.

Interestingly, when the family identification of FAOs is not accompanied by a context of migration or colonialism, it is either neutral towards or in favour of the children of Algerian immigrants identifying with the French. See the question on arguments in favour of the French identification of FAOs.

  2. 2.

In analysing the collected material, I identified two issues connected with the context of migration. Firstly, migration evokes certain characteristics associated with nationality that, in other contexts, would not be considered in this way at all. Secondly, if migrant identification is interpreted by someone as a non-French characteristic, even if it is attributed to French people in France, then other related identifications, even including spatial identification, may also be evaluated as non-French. Should the popularity of such a definition of the relationship between identifications increase, then this might mean that there is a social and spatial threat that people to whom migrant identification is attributed will become isolated.
