Abstract

This chapter focuses on the importance of assessing the child’s family context in the clinical assessment of children and adolescents. The chapter summarizes research on the importance of the family for both understanding a child’s emotions, behavior, and personality and research illustrating how the family context should influence the interpretation of test results. From this research, practical recommendations are made as to what dimensions of the family context should be routinely assessed in clinical assessments and what techniques are available to aid in this assessment.
