Abstract

This chapter reviews the impact of chronic pulmonary disease on postoperative outcome. Preexisting pulmonary disease is the most important predictor of postoperative pulmonary complications; indeed such impairment confers risks in the surgical setting rivaling that of the more dreaded cardiac complications. Herein the utility of various preoperative assessments such as arterial blood gases and spirometry is reviewed, and the less appreciated predictive role of the serum albumin and blood urea nitrogen is discussed.
