Abstract
The Abel Prize winner mathematician Peter D. Lax (1926–) was born in Budapest and immigrated to the USA with his family in 1941. During the 2000s Peter, his musician wife Lori, Magdi, and I met on a number of occasions, in their home on Central Park West, in our home in Budapest, and in our temporary home in Fort Lee, New Jersey. Lori was the daughter of the famous refugee mathematician Richard Courant. We attended memorable music evenings in their home. Peter’s first wife was a mathematician, Anneli (née Cahn), who died many years before. They had two boys; the older, Johnny was a graduate student in history when killed in an automobile accident by a drunken driver. The younger, Jimmy, is a physician of internal medicine in Manhattan. Lax and I recorded a couple of conversations at the Courant Institute.
