We introduce the contact group K and the contact tangent space, and explore its use as a technical tool in calculation. We show how to construct all stable germs as contact-versal unfoldings of rank zero germs. We prove a geometrical criterion for finite A-codimension, due to Gaffney and Mather, in terms of isolated instability. The chapter ends with a section on Thom–Boardman singularities.
