Abstract
Image-guided percutaneous vertebroplasty is a procedure that can be used to treat painful osteoporotic and pathologic fractures of the spine and has been shown to be safe and effective in patients with osteoporotic fractures who are not responding to medical management. The indications and contraindications for vertebroplasty as well as patient selection will be discussed. Technical aspects of the vertebroplasty procedure include accurate needle placement followed by the fluoroscopically monitored injection of the acrylic bone cement. Vertebroplasty can be used in the treatment of complex situations including multiple vertebral fractures, severe vertebral compression fractures, and painful sclerotic fractures. The occurrence of procedure related complications can be minimized.
