Abstract
Alveolar bone loss begins as soon as teeth are extracted. Root submergence technique (RST) and pontic shield (PS) embody the partial extraction therapy philosophy. The retention of a root or its part has benefited in the maintenance of hard and soft tissues. RST is a procedure wherein an entire root is left behind. The PS is a procedure wherein the shield is prepared similar to a socket shield, and only the buccal aspect of the root is left behind. RST was the first technique under the umbrella of PET. The current chapter discusses the indications, preparation aspects, complications, and management of these two concepts.
