Abstract
Since the first edition of “Photosynthesis in Algae” in 2003, some sixteen years ago, there have been many spectacular discoveries in the field. Some of these advances were covered in the book “The Physiology of Algae” (Springer Verlag, 2016), but many were not. In the current volume we have not attempted to cover all the discoveries but have sought out contributors who could make a difference to the current state of knowledge. Perhaps the greatest advances have been made in the area of algal biotechnology, algal bioproduction and useful algal products. We have not attempted to cover this burgeoning area and it is left for another book.
