Abstract
The dissertation engages the engineering student with professional engineering practice, and develops the skill of working under their own direction on a large project. It will involve working with uncertainty: solving problems that don’t have prior known solutions. There are six main types of project: computation-based design feasibility studies, experimental, theoretical and test and evaluation There will be three people mainly involved in a dissertation project: the student (who will do most of the work), the supervisor and for many projects, a client . This chapter also defines the main terminology used in dissertation projects.
