Abstract

Roch Thériault, the prophet-founder of a religious commune in Quebec, was known as “Moise” (Moses) by his followers. He is notorious in Canada for two sensational outbreaks of violence. His first was in 1981, when he killed a two-year-old boy and castrated one of his followers. His second violent phase was in 1988–1989, when he killed his favorite plural wife (he had nine) in a botched healing ritual and severed the arm of a less-favorite wife.
