Abstract

When it comes to teaching and developing material for English for Specific Purposes (ESP) and English for Academic Purposes (EAP), respectively, it is advisable that the language professional should work collaboratively either with the students or the professors from the specialized field (Hutchinson & Waters in English for Specific Purposes. Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, UK, 1987). This chapter aims to present the roads taken when designing and adapting teaching materials for ESP and EAP under a critical perspective, and focuses on classes given to the Industrial and Mechanical Engineering and a technical course on Port Operationsat Federal Center of Technological Education in Brazil. We conclude that critical literacy framework to the teaching ESP and EAP develop citizenship.
