Abstract

In the previous session, Lacan introduced ‘the real presence of the Other’s desire’ in the canvas of Psyche surprises Cupid. The following two sessions, however, question the image of so-called ‘real presence’. Since ‘the real presence’ of the Other’s desire results from a particular relation to the phallus, Lacan begins session XVII with a fundamental ambiguity between lowercase phi and Uppercase Phi, the imaginary phallus and symbolic phallus, objects which are inevitably linked and confused within the psychical economy.
