Abstract
Screening, preparation, post-procedure education, support, triage, follow-up, and referrals are often the responsibility of the radiology nurse. While these interventions often occur face-to-face, it is likely that more often they take place remotely, over the telephone, in the patent portal, or via other technology. Inaccurate and ineffective communication can be costly in many ways including jeopardized patient safety, compromised patient experience, and delayed or cancelled procedures. It is essential that the nurses involved in telephone communication with patients remain aware that it is nursing practice and extra caution is needed due to the inability to see and assess the patient in person. This chapter will address standards of practice for remote communication, also known as telehealth nursing, and provide some guidelines for the nurse that, if followed, will ensure safety for the patients.
