Abstract
In this chapter, the case is made for inclusive pedagogy as the approach to education that is most relevant to autistic pupils. Inclusive pedagogy assumes that all children are capable as learners and that inclusion requires change in the teacher and her beliefs, attitudes and knowledge, as well as in the context of learning. It is argued that such a view strongly aligns with the perspective of autistic people on education and their prioritisation of teacher understanding and environmental adaptation. Critical issues for education as it relates to autistic pupils are outlined in relation to the role of communication within teaching, the value of continuous experimentation within pedagogy, the need to rethink behaviour management for autistic pupils, and the importance of recognising the professionalism of teachers and existing professional standards.
