The Digital Parisian Stage Project

Abstract

In the early nineteenth century Paris hosted a wide variety of theaters, even after Napoleon reduced their number in 1807. Charles Beaumont Wicks’s exhaustive catalog of plays that premièred in Paris in the nineteenth century is an ideal sampling frame for a new corpus. The Digital Parisian Stage corpus is based on a random 1% sample of the plays listed in Wicks Volume 1 (1950), covering the years 1800–1815. Of those 31 plays, 24 were obtained from Google Books, Gallica and other sources. These works have been converted to full text, cleaned and formatted. They are currently available for free download and collaboration on GitHub.
