Abstract

FRANTEXT was first collected in the 1960s for the Trésor de la langue française dictionary. Due to demand from researchers it was cleaned up and released on CD-ROM and on the Internet in the 1980s and 1990s. The original intent was to base it on a representative sample, but due to time constraints it was compiled using an unrepresentative “Principle of Authority.” For the period 1800–1815 the result is four texts chosen based on the subjective interests of literary historians.
