Abstract
In this study Aluminium A356 alloy is reinforced with induction furnace steel slag for improving the mechanical and corrosion properties inorder to meet the functional requirements in automotive brake shoe. The Metal Matrix Composite (MMC) was prepared by using stir casting technique. The metal matrix composite was subjected to salt spray test to study the corrosion behavior in marine environment. The minimal weight loss due to corrosion indicated that the addition of steel slag reinforcement improved the corrosion rate of the metal matrix composite. The samples subjected to corrosion were characterized using optical microscope and SEM. It was observed that the addition of the steel slag not only improved the corrosion resistance, it also improved the hardness of the material, which is desirable for brake shoe application.
