Abstract

Ivo Sanader and Zoran Milanović dominated the Croatian politics in the second decade after independence, both as the leaders of the two major Croatian parties, and as prime ministers. Along the theoretical framework of the edited volume, the chapter rates the personality traits of flexibility, integrity, competence, need for power, self-confidence, and cognitive complexity for Milanović and Sanader across their four terms as party leaders. Within these terms, they served both as PMs and leaders of the opposition, which allows for tracing their personality traits under different contextual conditions and across time. The analysis identifies flexibility as the trait which characterizes both leaders, while integrity is the crucial distinguishing trait. The final step of the analysis links the personality traits of the leaders with outcomes for their parties, particularly electoral results and party cohesion.
