Asthma Health Disparities

Health Disparities in Allergic Diseases

Abstract

Asthma is common in adults and in children. Asthma prevalence, morbidity, and mortality are not experienced equally in the United States. For decades, asthma health disparities have been known and interventions implemented, and yet the disparities continue. In this chapter, we describe the state of asthma health disparities and explanations for why they persist. We then discuss efforts in Chicago to reduce asthma health disparities. Multilevel, collaborative efforts are necessary to reduce asthma morbidity and mortality and provide equal access to care for all with asthma in the United States.
