Abstract
The residual limb must securely attach to the prosthesis via a custom socket . This device must be comfortable, safe, and securely attached to the prosthesis . Health of the residuum depends upon the socket environment, which can be harsh, unless properly designed. The socket environment lacks ventilation, impairs circulation, produces shear forces on the tissue, and may behave poorly during gait. Many factors influence the socket interface, including its fitting, composition, and fabrication. This chapter outlines these factors.
