Transoral Endoscopic Vestibular Approach for Management of Thyroid Malignancies

Abstract

The United States has seen an apparent increase in the incidence of thyroid cancer over the last three decades. Much debate is had on whether this temporal change represents a true increase in incidence or greater diagnostic sensitivity of thyroid pathology. There has however been a consensus on the relative benign clinical behavior of well-differentiated thyroid cancer which has resulted in a paradigm shift in the management thyroid malignancy with greater emphasis on risk stratification and de-escalation of intervention. As a result of these trends, there has been an increase interest in minimally invasive surgical approaches to the thyroid gland. This chapter investigates these trends and evaluates the role of endoscopic approaches in the management of thyroid malignancies.
