Abstract
In this book we have stayed so far with a linear material response. This chapter marks a change. We consider quantum emitters with a nonlinear dynamics. As a starting point, we introduce the simplest model of a two-level system, which will allow us to develop a pictorial representation of the system state in terms of a Bloch vector. The generalization to few-level systems will be discussed in the next chapter, where we will also present examples representative for nano optics and plasmonics.
