Abstract
Trace elements (TEs) in soil are a great challenge to agriculture sustainability. Therefore, an experiment was conducted to explore the ameliorating effects of irrigation with magnetically treated water (MTW) on oxidative stress and antioxidants defense mechanisms of broad bean (Vicia faba L.) under Ni and Pb toxicity. Four soil groups were spiked with Ni (250 and 500 mg kg−1 soil) and Pb (500 and 1000 mg kg−1 soil) irrigated with tap water, and other four were irrigated with MTW along with untreated soil group. Proline, protein contents, and oxidative stress damage (indicated from increased H2O2 level and lipid peroxidation) were significantly increased (p ≤ 0.05) in soils spiked with Ni and Pb. Superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) activities decreased with increasing Ni and Pb exposure, while ascorbate peroxidase (APX), glutathione (GSH), and anthocyanins increased with most treatments significantly. Peroxidase (POX) increased with Ni and decreased with Pb treatments. Proline and total protein contents were decreased in plants subjected to 500 mg Ni and 1000 mg Pb kg−1 soil and irrigated with MTW while increased in plants subjected to 250 mg Ni and 500 mg Pb kg−1 soil compared to respective treated plants irrigated with tap water (corresponding controls). Contents of H2O2, lipid peroxidation, and electrolyte leakage were declined in all TEs-subjected plants irrigated with MTW compared to corresponding controls. Antioxidants content increased, while anthocyanins decreased comparing to corresponding controls. Irrigation with MTW (1000 gauss) could reduce the toxicity of Ni and Pb in Vicia faba.
