Pelvic Floor Muscle Training and Neurogenic Overactive Bladder in Stroke and Multiple Sclerosis

Abstract

In this chapter a review of randomized controlled trials exploring the effect of pelvic floor muscle training with or without biofeedback or in combinations with electrical stimulation was conducted. Four RCTs (six publications) were found in patients after stoke and eight RCTs in MS patients. Some effect of PFMT with and without biofeedback and with and without addition of electrical stimulation was found. However, the studies are flawed with small sample sizes and huge heterogeneity of the population studied, use of outcome measures, and content of the interventions. There is a need for further RCTs to guide clinical practice.
