Abstract

Osseointegration was first described by Brånemark in 1977. It is defined as a direct structural and functional connection between ordered living bone and the surface of a load-carrying implant and involves different physiological processes. Titanium implants with treated surface and specific designs are usually used to stimulate osteoblasts to form bonds with the surface of the implant. A multidisciplinary team is usually required for a careful preoperative evaluation, intraoperative placement, and postoperative care. Different techniques, implants, and attachments can be used for optimal results. The osseointegration has many advantages with few disadvantages compared to the traditional reconstruction techniques. Complications such as skin irritation or implant failure can occur, but are avoided with careful selection of the patients, preoperative evaluation and planning, and a proper implant placement technique.
