Abstract

Reconstructive microsurgery has become an integral part of head and neck reconstructive surgery, allowing the completion of complex resections with predictable outcome. These improvements are related to technological advances, better imaging, advances in surgical techniques, and new surgical instruments. With regard to microsurgery, research is nowadays focused on flap selection, design, and computer customization of the procedure. However, regardless of the innovation introduced, it is undoubtable that the actual clinical success in microsurgery relies on good technical skill in vessel anastomosis. Microsurgical anastomosis is based on simple sequential surgical maneuvers that are essential to strictly follow in order to guarantee the best outcome.
