Abstract

Ascertaining the presence of psychosis currently or in the past is a critical clinical skill as your diagnosis and differential diagnosis hinges on it. This chapter provides guidance about how to go about this task, with emphasis on the cross-sectional mental status exam and, critically, the longitudinal history. Graphically depicting a patient’s history on a timeline can help organize the gathering of information and putting it together in a case presentation. Common mistakes and difficult clinical encounters including malingering are covered as well.
