Abstract

There are a myriad of dressing choices to address the needs of an open wound, and the most appropriate choice will be based upon an accurate assessment recognizing the location, surface area and depth, tissue type, exudate, and condition of the periwound skin as the primary drivers. While multiple dressings and combinations of dressings exist, a knowledge of the basic categories enables the clinician to meet the basic needs of the wound. This chapter will discuss critical assessment points and the attributes of ideal dressing and review the basic types of dressings available on which the clinician can build their knowledge base.
