Abstract
This chapter provides the literature review, discussing organisational theory in the context of the publishing industry. This creative and cultural industry has been frequently analysed, debated and discussed within the fields of book and publishing history, bibliography, media studies and literary studies; however, there is a gap within studies which uses the theories and methods from academic business research. The chapter begins with a discussion of new institutionalist theory in particular addressing how and why certain practices are championed over others in an organisation, and the affect this has on an industry. The chapter also draws on conversations regarding institutional processes, legitimacy building and institutional entrepreneurship. Furthermore, the chapter discusses professionalisation in the Victorian publishing industry, a mechanism that has been argued within institutional theory as a key factor for the legitimacy of action.
