Abstract
In this chapter, the book editors problematise the idea of education utopias and explain how it can be applied to the Chinese and Nordic contexts. Reviewing recent studies on both societal and educational issues in the two contexts, they propose to add to current approaches by revising certain principles of comparative education. For example, the authors argue that there is a need to shift from an overemphasis on difference to taking into account both difference and similarity. They also propose the following guiding principles: modesty from all those involved; realism; myth hunting; and decentring. By doing so, they wish to avoid comparing apples and oranges and providing readers with false analogies. The different chapters comprising this book are introduced at the end of the chapter.
