Abstract

The chapter begins with a description of the problems associated with child maltreatment and incidence of child abuse and neglect. The authors present empirically based assessment methods and interventions. Interventions include child-focused, parent-focused, cognitive-behavioral and behavioral interventions. The authors discuss the state of the research on these interventions, concluding that there are many gaps in our knowledge of effective practices. Behavioral and cognitive-behavioral interventions emerge as the strategies with the most empirical support.
