The Process of Demotivation in Language Learning: An Integrative Account

  • Chapter
  • First Online:

Abstract

In this chapter, Thorner and Kikuchi take a fresh look at the issue of demotivation in second language acquisition and challenge the perception that the phenomenon can be satisfactorily understood as a product of external factors. After reviewing existing studies on demotivation, the authors draw together diverse perspectives on declining motivation from the fields of psychology, dynamic systems theory, and neuroscience. Finally, they suggest that demotivation in its various forms may best be tackled by addressing needs deficits, dealing with emotions that disrupt learning, and challenging the patterns of thought that put motivation at risk. The insights and recommendations that Thorner and Kikuchi offer are relevant to both researchers and practitioners.
