Abstract

The chapter provides an overview of historical and current research on Hungarian-induced linguistic changes on Romani phonology, morphology and syntax. It discusses the influence of Hungarian on the sound system of Romani, the integration of Hungarian loanwords, and the impact that Hungarian on derivational and inflectional morphology, as well as on various syntactic structures and the word order. Hungarian has had a significant influence on certain Romani dialects due to its geographical position (‘on the way’ between the Balkans and Central/Western Europe) and to policies adopted by the political systems in the last centuries (the Habsburgs, the Horthy regime and the socialist state).
