Abstract

Because nonadherence has detrimental effects on the patient, physician, and the healthcare system, healthcare providers may use patient adherence improvement strategies to improve overall clinical outcome. Because health care providers only have direct control over their own behaviors, a physician (or provider)-centered approach is a sensible way to consider adherence interventions. Physician-centered strategies can be organized into three levels. First is a foundation of assuring trust (that the patient trusts the doctor) and accountability. The second level implements what are generally considered the standard approaches for enhancing adherence including addressing cost, the complexity of the treatment regimen, patient education, and reminders. The final level constitutes more advanced psychological techniques to improve patient adherence.
