Abstract

The pleura may be affected by primary or metastatic tumor spread of either intrathoracic or extrathoracic neoplasms. Primary pleural tumors are rare, representing approximately 10% of all pleural neoplasms. Malignant lesions are more common than benign ones. Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) and solitary fibrous tumor of the pleura (SFTP) represent the two most common primary tumors. Primary neoplasms also include lymphoma, epithelioid hemangioendothelioma, synovial sarcoma, and other rarer entities.

Metastatic disease accounts for about 90% of pleural tumors. Cross-sectional imaging – computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) – play a pivotal role in both diagnosis and staging of pleural neoplasms, particularly for the depiction of patterns of cancer dissemination.
