Pediatric Respiratory Diseases

Abstract

Non-invasive ventilation is increasingly used in children and adolescents, particularly in those with chronic diseases with respiratory pump failure who are at risk for special health care needs. Prolonged non-invasive ventilation is an alternative for home management that must include clinical monitoring, health care professionals follow-up and continuous education. Its benefits have been established in neuromuscular disorders, kyphoscoliosis, and obstructive sleep apnea syndrome improving prognosis, quality of life, and costs. New developments in flow generators, ventilators, humidifier systems, and interfaces have improved chronic care of chronic respiratory patients.
