Abstract
Non-invasive mechanical ventilation (NIMV) has been shown to reduce intubation and in-hospital mortality in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) exacerbations and acute hypercapnic respiratory failure. This patient group has a poor medium-term prognosis, with high rates of mortality and rehospitalisation in the year following discharge. Specific follow-up programmes are therefore needed for these patients.
