Abstract

Given the complexity, importance, and influence of intimate relationships in the survival, evolution, and well-being of human beings, it is necessary to create theoretical and empirical approaches that allow scanning its meanings, dynamics, and operation. Research and psychosocial theories about the perceptions, expectations, emotions, and behavior in couple relationships describe a generally coherent pattern. However, the inconsistent conceptualization and operationalization, the use of small and nonrepresentative samples, and the consideration of few variables in each study have led to non-replicable results from one sample to another. A way to confront these issues is to conduct multi-method multidimensional studies, based on clear and systematic theory within different socio-cultural contexts. This chapter presents an integrative approach that includes biological, cultural, social, historical, psychological, and behavioral variables. In essence, to describe and, therefore, understand close relationships, it is necessary to review their characterization through history, philosophy, science, and culture. From an integral perspective, the chapter covers the most relevant theoretical models of psychology regarding personal relationships and appraises the social and cultural construction which emanates from qualitative and quantitative studies conducted with Mexican men and women. Thus, a bio-psycho-socio-cultural model that provides theoretical and empirical support for each component is presented.
