Abstract

A 26-year-old woman, G2P1 and at 36 weeks gestation, presents to L&D with an infected left breast. The lesion started a few days ago as a small area of redness and tenderness near the nipple but now the entire breast is inflamed and exquisitely tender. She reports not having had any appetite for the preceding 24 hours and feeling hot and flushed all over. She has been drinking lots of fluids but still feels dizzy when she stands up too quickly, and she threw up in the car on the way to the hospital. Her vital signs on admission are BP = 80/60, HR = 126, RR = 24, temperature = 102.1 degrees Fahrenheit, weight = 178 lbs., and height = 5 feet 6 inches (L-1). Her past medical history is unremarkable and her previous baby was born vaginally under epidural anesthesia.
