The Opioid Epidemic and the Therapeutic Community Model

Abstract

In this chapter, the authors outline the Italian therapeutic community model and its main characteristics, placing it within the larger system of care for addiction in Italy. San Patrignano (SanPa), Italy’s largest therapeutic community (TC), is introduced with particular emphasis on its history and organization. Two independent follow-up studies of individuals treated at SanPa and a retention-in-treatment study, Community Outcome, are described. Study outcomes are connected to some of SanPa’s characteristics which are common to the Italian TC model. Outcomes demonstrating particular effectiveness in treatment retention and stable recovery with reintegration into society and the labor market are highlighted.
