Abstract

He is of course extremely bright, but he is also very modest in his behavior. He has a child of a moral compass, which keeps him being himself without self-inflation. He is a very generous person,” says science historian Gerald Holton about Bloembergen [1].

DARPA is the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency. This institution was set up in 1958 “to prevent strategic surprise from negatively impacting U.S. national security and create strategic surprise for U.S. adversaries by maintaining the technological superiority of the U.S. military.” (website www.arpa.mil).

Sun Microsystems is now known for the Java programming language, an open language, which can be found on practically all Windows and Apple computers, as well as on mobile applications such as Android from Google.

  3. 3.

The Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (in Dutch KNAW) was founded in 1808 as an advisory body to the Dutch Government—a role that it continues to play today. The Academy derives its authority from the quality of its members, who represent the full spectrum of scientific and scholarly endeavor and are selected on the basis of their achievements. It is also responsible for fifteen internationally renowned institutes whose research and collections put them in the vanguard of Dutch science and scholarship. www.knaw.nl.
