Influences Beyond College that Shape Revised Choices

Abstract

In this chapter we offer study findings about three sources of influence on STEM students’ rethinking of their education and careers that arise wholly or partially beyond their experiences in STEM majors. We discuss the consequences of working while in school, parental influence on academic and career choices, and students’ perceptions of the career opportunities available in the current economy. Although we consider each of these sources of influence separately, they are often interrelated and may intersect with college experiences.
