Shimon Markish Revisited

Chapter

Abstract

The accepted view, shaped by Shimon Markish and others, that Erasmus’ anti-Jewish comments meant a rejection of contemporary Christian over-ceremonialism and not anti-Semitic sentiment, is put to the test. It is deduced that the bulk of Erasmus’ expressions, concerning Marranos or Jews, cannot be interpreted as a conceptualization of Judaism intended to point to categories of Christian misconduct, nor can they be defined as devoid of any ethnic or racial implication.
