Demographic Profile of Syrians in Turkey

Part of the European Studies of Population book series (ESPO,volume 20)

Abstract

Turkey currently hosts the largest number of Syrian refugees, with a population of 3.6 million people, for whom the Turkish State defined a “temporary protection” status. The flows started in April 2011, and arrivers were directed to camps for the first 2 years. However, the size of the flow did not permit this after 2013, and most Syrian people now live in urban areas of mainly big cities. Demographic surveys show that the arriver population is much younger than the population of Turkey, and there are indications of high fertility. There are also studies indicating problems regarding Syrian children’s access to education, and the working age population’s access to formal labor. This chapter reviews these issues based on existing data sources and publications.

Notes

  1. 1.

The terms “Syrians” or “Syrian refugees” in this chapter are used for persons under “temporary protection status” in Turkey, a status given to Syrian citizens or stateless persons arriving from Syria due to internal conflict. We preferred these terms for simplicity.
