Abstract

In this chapter I provide insights on grant writing. The chapter is written for junior faculty members who want to become more competitive when preparing proposals for external funding. It is guided by the premise that junior faculty members should find funding opportunities to support the work they want to do. I first address the grant review process and invite readers to think about who their audience is. Then I discuss the grant-writing process, helping readers understand that grants are not journal articles; these are different genres that require different kinds of rhetoric.

Acknowledgments

I am thankful to Keith Leatham for inviting me to put some of my ideas on paper and write this chapter. I also owe a great debt to all junior faculty members with whom I have tried out and developed some of these ideas. Finally, my most sincere appreciation goes to Doug Clements, Nicole Louie, and Nicolas Boileau for their careful review and comments on a previous version of the chapter.
