Abstract

Olecranon process fractures are frequently treated orthopedic injuries often due to a fall directly onto a flexed elbow or fall onto outstretched arm with acute pull from the triceps tendon. Nonoperative management of these fractures is reserved for patients with nondisplaced fractures and intact extensor mechanisms. However, patients with open fractures, soft tissue damage, extensor mechanism disruption, and incongruent intra-articular fractures should be indicated for operative fixation. Plate fixation is utilized primarily in fractures that are oblique and have comminution or those with associated elbow instability. Ultimately, the goal of surgical intervention is to restore articular congruity, to repair the extensor mechanism and to stabilize the elbow joint.
