Trepanation, Trephining and Craniotomy

Abstract

Although the cranial surgery succeeded around the Mediterranean basin during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, in mainland Europe and in the British Islands there were also brilliant surgeons involved in cranial surgery. In this chapter we present and discuss the most relevant proposals about cranial surgery, indications for trepanation and technique and instruments suggested by Peter Lowe in Scotland, John Browne and Richard Wiseman in England and Hans von Gersdorff, Walter Herman Ryff, Wilhelm Fabry and Johannes Scultetus in Germany.
