Abstract
The assumption of this chapter is that our readers, entrepreneurs and managers, aim to make their businesses last. The long-term orientation toward sustainability of a business model in global markets begins with gradual implementation of a global mindset among all employees. A global mindset has three ingredients: cognitive ability (knowledge about global markets and the ability to learn more), affective ability (curiosity, willingness to work with people from other countries) and behavioral ability (the capacity to create relationships and trust). The implementation of your firm’s global mindset rests on the three “E”s: empathy (individual and organizational, leading to the sought-after strategic flexibility), ethics (the difficult task of defining and implementing your firm’s universal moral standards, which determine the guidelines for the daily routines of your employees around the world) and engagement (acknowledgment of the necessity of dedicating sufficient managerial time to the implementation of your global expansion plans).
