Abstract
One of the most common mental health problems in childhood is attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). More recently, this disorder is being recognized as having an impact on adult functioning as well. The co-occurrence of ADHD with intellectual disabilities is much more recent than for the general population. This situation may be due to the fact that the disorder was referred to as “minimal brain dysfunction” for many years and therefore those with intellectual disability were excluded for most of the research that was conducted during that time. The historical developments of ADHD will be covered, along with a description of the condition as it pertains to persons with intellectual disabilities. A review of interventions will constitute the bulk of the chapter.
